For many students, starting in a new school can be scary, daunting, and stressful. JFS students and staff, for the last three years, have worked to help alleviate those feelings with the Student Ambassador program.
Over 100 seventh- and eighth-graders were recommended by middle school staff. After surveys and interviews, 32 students were chosen to be this year’s ambassadors.
This diverse group of students represents a wide range of interests so as to better match a new student with a current student.
JFS student ambassadors participate in a day of training that includes discussions on what a new student will need help with such as navigating the building, going through breakfast and lunch lines, and opening lockers. Team building exercises, communication skills, listening skills, representation, and what it means to be an ambassador are all part of the training. JFS staff Laura Howell, Liz Howes, and John Giacche conducted the training program and helped coordinate and oversee its implementation throughout the year. Mr. Giacche reminded the students, “You students were chosen by teachers in this school as the best representation of JFS. This is a privilege and It is a responsibility that we take seriously.”
