Just as in the TV show “The Amazing Race” in which contestants travel around the world on a giant scavenger hunt, students in Steve Hamlin’s science classes embarked on a journey back in time as they chose geologic periods to visit along the Geologic Time Scale.
Students chose their teams and at each destination, they collected information and evidence of that period. They had a variety of time travel tasks along the way and filled in a game board map with flags and gnomes to mark their progress. Their culminating project was to turn their research into a Google Slide show with the information they collected. When asked about this project, students said, “It was fun!” And, “It’s playing a game while we are learning!”
